An open call is quickly written. The harder part comes afterwards: who decides, and on what grounds? For the facade exhibition at the Rathsmühle, that has been settled since 31 July.

Five voices from Celle

Susanne Gudehus has been teaching art for thirty years, twenty-five of them at the FaBi in Celle. Svitlana Lutsenko gets people to pick up a brush themselves in her art workshops. Andreas Sprenger designs and prints with Allernixe on Schuhstraße. Daniel Wunn works with the DIEVANDALS collective and organises art in public space with Kultur Allerorts. Roman Thomas joins them for the Denk.Mal board.

We invited the four of them because they look at a picture from different directions: from painting, from teaching, from design, from the street. That mix is exactly what a wall needs when everyone will walk past it later. The full introductions are on the project page for the facade exhibition.

How the selection works

Each of them rates the works alone first, through a protected page. Nobody sees how the others have voted. For every submission there is one question about which work should go onto a banner, and one about how strongly it holds up at large scale. Only when everyone is through do we sit down together. The tally decides nothing, it is the basis for the conversation.

One thing that belongs here

Anyone on the jury may submit work as well. They then do not vote on their own pieces. That is not just an agreement, it is locked in the voting tool: your own sheets cannot be rated at all. Four votes instead of five decide on those works.

We are writing this down because it belongs here. A jury nobody knows is a black box. A jury whose rules are in the open makes a decision you can argue with.

What happens next

The deadline passed on 9 August. Now the jury gets to work. Everyone who submitted will hear back from us, including those not selected this time. What comes of it will be on the project page.
