The selection has been made

The jury met at Trift 32 on 12 August 2026. Two hours later the selection stood: 55 works are going onto the façade of the Rathsmühle. The youngest of the selected artists is 13 years old, the oldest is over eighty.

When the banners go up on the scaffolding and when we open is not yet fixed. Many people are asking, and we understand that. As soon as the date is set, we will let you know here on this page, in the journal and directly to everyone involved.

The response was greater than expected. 130 artists applied and submitted 347 works between them. From oil painting through watercolour and pastel to digital work and historic photography, almost everything was there that can be printed on a banner.

To make that number manageable in a single afternoon, the association built a protected jury portal. It let every member of the jury view all submissions beforehand and rate them for themselves, without seeing anyone else's votes. On the day of the meeting those preliminary decisions were brought together, so the group could concentrate on the 78 applications where at least two votes had gone to the same work. The choice was made by picture, not by name: each application could show up to three works, and exactly one work per person goes onto the façade.

All 55 selected artists have been notified, and the works and names are now further down this page. Then the work on the print files begins: the banners need the works at high resolution, and some of them will be photographed again for that purpose.

Not being selected is not a rejection. There were 55 places on the façade, and more than twice as many people applied.

These are the works that will hang as banners on the scaffolding of the Rathsmühle. The jury chose them on 12 August 2026; here they appear in alphabetical order. Every artist has one banner, and Wolfgang Rabe shows two prints on his.

We will announce when the banners go up and when we open as soon as the date is fixed. Here, in the journal and directly to everyone involved.

We know the deadline is tight. The town's approval reached us late, and the scaffolding goes up in August. Every submission is welcome.

Three steps to take part

  1. Choose your works Pick three pieces that work at a large scale. Painting, photography, printmaking, digital art, anything that can be printed on a banner is welcome.
  2. Send an email Images and details in one email to kunst@denkmalcelle.de, subject „Fassade“. No signature needed.
  3. Wait to hear from us A jury makes the selection, we print the banners and mount them on the scaffolding. Everyone who submits hears back from us, including those not selected this time.

What to put in the email

  • Three images Of your works, high resolution, at least 300 dpi, as JPG or TIFF.
  • Details for each work Title, original size and technique, for example oil on canvas, watercolour, acrylic, photography or digital work.
  • A short biography Five sentences at most: who you are, what drives you, where you are rooted.
  • A photo of you For project communication and documentation.
  • How to reach you Email or WhatsApp, whichever you prefer.
  • Website or social media profile optional For press and public relations around the exhibition.

Jury and selection
  • Five votes decide on the selection: four invited experts from Celle and one voice from the Denk.Mal board. Who they are is listed further down this page.
  • At most one work per artist is selected.
  • It is possible that no work by a given person is selected. The jury's decision is final.
  • Selection is based on artistic quality, impact at large scale and the overall composition of the exhibition.
  • Everyone who submits is informed of the decision.
Rights of use
  • Copyright in the original work remains entirely with you.
  • You grant Denk.Mal e.V. the right to produce the submitted work once as a printed banner and to show it publicly as part of the façade exhibition.
  • Denk.Mal e.V. may use the submitted images for press and public relations around the exhibition, for instance on social media, in flyers and in press releases.
  • Submitting material confirms that you have read and accepted these terms. No separate signature is required.
What happens to the banner afterwards
  • Once the exhibition ends, the printed banner becomes the property of Denk.Mal e.V.
  • The association may reuse it within its non-profit work: as a thank you for a donation that goes entirely into the association's work.
  • Equally for further use by the town of Celle or other public institutions.
  • Or for creative reuse such as bags, sewing projects and upcycling, and for responsible recycling once none of that is possible any more.

Who decides

The jury

Five people decided which works go onto the facade. Four of them have been at home in Celle's art and culture scene for years, joined by one voice from the Denk.Mal board. Each of them rated the works alone first, nobody saw anyone else's votes. The group sat down together on 12 August 2026 at Trift 32.

Susanne Gudehus

Art teacher and painter

She has painted since childhood, today mostly in watercolour. She studied art history and Italian studies. For thirty years she has worked as an art teacher, twenty-five of them at the FaBi in Celle, alongside projects with children, teenagers and adults. About ten years ago she discovered urban sketching for herself, and she has been drawing on her travels and in groups ever since.

Svitlana Lutsenko

Artist, paint.wine.cheese art events

She loves abstract art and is convinced that every person can be creative. Under the name paint.wine.cheese she runs art workshops where people leave everyday life behind for a few hours and paint a picture of their own. She studied marketing in South Korea, where art was a firm part of the course. She came to Germany in 2022 and has lived in Celle since June 2023.

Andreas Sprenger

Graphic designer, Team Allernixe

First graphic design at international agencies in Hamburg, then a lectureship at Beijing Normal University. In June 2017 he opened the first pop-up shop under the Allernixe name on Celle's Brandplatz. Since December 2018 the design studio and shop have been at Schuhstraße 47, in one of the finest half-timbered houses in the old town. He and his wife Tabea develop brands and corporate design there, along with packaging, posters and finely made print work. The shop hosts exhibitions, and their stamp and print workshops let people print for themselves.

Daniel Wunn

Visual artist, DIEVANDALS

He is from Celle, spent a while in Hamburg and lives here again now. With DIEVANDALS, the collective he co-founded, he works as a painter, videographer and musician, and he organises international projects. His workshops are open to every age group, and what matters most to him is that young people find their own way of expressing themselves. He is deputy chair of Kultur Allerorts e.V. and is currently developing the Freiraum project with the Street & Art team.

Roman Thomas

Photographer and artist, chair of BBK Celle

Born in Celle in 1975, trained as a joiner, freelance since 1999 as a photographer, designer and artist. He photographs for international clients in retail and architecture, alongside his own free work. At the BBK, the federal association of visual artists, he chairs the Celle branch and sits on the board of the Lower Saxony state association. At Denk.Mal he is deputy chair and sits on the jury for the association.

Anyone on the jury was free to submit work as well, but did not vote on their own pieces. That was not just an agreement, it was locked in the voting tool: your own sheets could not be rated at all. Four votes instead of five decided on those works.

When the Rathsmühle in Celle is clad in scaffolding for its renovation, a public art exhibition takes shape on its façade. Selected paintings are shown as large-format printed banners on the scaffolding, clearly visible to everyone passing by. For a few months, a building site becomes an open-air gallery.

A landmark in transition

The Rathsmühle is one of the oldest sites in Celle. A mill on this spot on the river Aller is mentioned as early as 1378, and from 1389 it belonged to the town, which is how it came by the name Rathsmühle (the town-council mill). The present brick building dates from 1898/99, and flour was milled here until 2009. Today the mill is a listed monument.

Now a new chapter begins: as its owner, Stadtwerke Celle is having the building renovated in keeping with its listed status. The yellow render is coming off, the historic brickwork beneath is coming back into view, and a glass structure is set to crown the roof. It is precisely in this in-between period that the façade exhibition takes its place.

Art on the scaffolding

For the exhibition, Denk.Mal issued a public call for artists to submit their work. The selected works are printed as banners of around two by two metres and mounted on the scaffolding. According to the town, the scaffolding is expected to be in place from August 2026 to January 2027. The project is created in cooperation with the town of Celle and belongs to the Art & Culture programme group.

One possibility, as at an earlier exhibition by the team, is live spraying directly on the scaffolding, perhaps together with schoolchildren. For now this is an idea, not yet a firm commitment.

Not the first time

Back in 2020, the same team already turned a Celle façade into an exhibition. The Rathsmühle carries this idea forward at one of the most visible spots in the town, now under its own association Denk.Mal e.V.
